Whitechapel Workhouse

I read the accompanying article on workhouses and found it very detailed. As long as we read it with mid Victorian eyes, they seemed truly concerned with getting the wretched poor off the streets.

The building looks very grand, in an austere sort of way. Has it been pulled down since? or converted to some other use?

It became St Peter's Hospital but was demolished in the 1950's. We are very coloured by books like Oliver Twist but I agree I think they did try to help, albeiy in what seems to us now a very inhuman way.
